Never Go Back by Lee Child

Friends,

This is my review of the book Never Go Back by Lee Child, which I read recently. This is the continuing saga of the ex-miltary cop Jack Reacher. On his continuing progress hitch-hiking around America he has come back to his old military unit the 100th Military Police.

His reason for coming back is that he spoke to the current commanding officer Major Susan Turner and he liked her voice. So he decided that he would come back and ask her out for a meal. Sadly as soon as he crosses the bases threshold things start to go wrong for him.

He is accused of the homicide relating to an event that occurred 16 years ago. Along with that a paternity suite comes out of the wood work for a daughter he did not know anything about. Added to that as ex-military he is co-opted back into the army so he has to obey army rules. Then he finds that Susan the person who he had gone to the base to see in the first place is now missing – locked up in a guard cell accused of bribery.

Somehow though the most amazing series of twists and turns Jack manages to solve a major corruption mystery and clear his name, but you would not guess how he does it without reading the book, so I won't spoil the plot any more. Other than to say that numerous laws are broken, bones broken and guard cells broken out of during the course of the story. All adds to the fun.

This is an enjoyable readable book. A real page turner as the saying goes and was certainly better than a lot of TV that was on over Christmas.

Die Trying by Lee Child

p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; } Friends

This is my review of the book Die Trying by lee Child which I have read recently. This is a Jack Reacher story. Jack is a tough no nonsense hero, and seems to be on a mysterious trip across America. At each place he ends up some form of trouble seems to fall upon him and it becomes a life and death challenge for him to solve.

This story does not disappoint. He is acting as as a doorman in Chicago and is snatched up from the street along with a young woman in crutches that he was happening to be helping at the time.

It turns out that the woman is an FBI agent, and gradually during a long journey across America trapped in the back of a van the real story of the kidnap comes out. The woman has multiple links to the ruling authorities and even the president so she makes the ideal pawn to trade in a kidnap situation.

Being such a high profile hostage means that she gets a lot of attention from the authorities but the CCTV images seem to show Jack helping the kidnappers. Jack is faced with the challenge of saving the woman from the kidnappers and himself from the kidnappers whilst persuading the authorities that he is not one of the bad guys.

A good enjoyable book that charges along at a pace. It has enough twists in it with double agents to keep me turning the pages over till the end.

Worth Dying For by Lee Child

Friends,

This is my review of the book “Worth Dying For” by Lee Child, which I read recently. This was the second Jack Reacher book that I mentioned in my previous post http://fullersfolio.weebly.com/1/post/2014/02/-gone-tomorrow-by-lee-child.html which I got from the second hand book shop, and have finally got round to reading.

Like the last Jack Reacher book, the plot line is very different. Jack is out in the wilds of Nebraska, and comes across a small town that is totally under the thumb of a local clan the Duncans. He tries to help a local, and uncovers a case of a missing eight year old girl, that has not been solved. He starts investigating and the Duncans don't like this, so they go after Jack.

Added to this the Duncans as a trucking business, are shipping more than just corn. A mysterious illegal package, that various parties are interested in. The underworld food chain. The Duncans blame Jack for a delay and they all want to come and investigate what is going on.

Just the perfect setting for a massive battle with Jack at the centre. This was not really a complex plot like the previous Sherlock Holmes Mystery – the biggest question was – what was the illegal cargo, and who besides Jack would be left standing at the end of the story.

All good fun really, the book was an easy page turner – This was book 32 week 24 fiction 29 (audio book 7) non fiction 3.

Gone Tomorrow by Lee Child

Friends this is my review of the book Gone Tomorrow by Lee Child, which I read recently. Previously, since I have been taking note of which books I have read, I have read one of the Jack Reacher novels before, which I enjoyed, so seeing a couple going for a song at a second hand book fair I snapped them up.

This certainly has a different plot line as a starter. Someone commits suicide in front of our hero Jack Reacher on a very late subway train. Jack then sets out to try and solve the mystery as to why she killed herself as she did not leave any message.

Sadly a lot of the story seems to involve various chases around New York City, and as a reader who has not been to that city, the story did lack depth, as one unknown street is very similar to another unknown street. So I don't know if these chases made sense or not.

So as not to totally spoil the plot for anyone who has not read the story, but it does involve politicians, FBI, terrorists and the local police. I will not reveal too much more, except of course Jack manages to escape several times from situations that seem impossible. A whole team of crack foreign assigns is no match for our hero as the body count rises.

It was an enjoyable easy read if one leaves reality aside for a few hours. This was book 17 week 14 fiction 15 (audio book 3) non fiction 2

Jack Reacher : One Shot by Lee Child

Friends

This is my review of the book Jack Reacher : One Shot, which I have read recently. This is the first Lee Child book that I have read, and I must admit the fact that it has been turned into a film with Tom Cruise, swayed me into buying the book.

The start of the book is not that nice with it's vivid description of the murder of five people, and I did wonder what I had got, but fortunately the story improves. Seemingly it is a closed case and the police are certain who did it, but of course this is not the case, and gradually the mystery is revealed.

There are several mysteries here and they are slowly revealed. Each layer of intrigue is slowly pealed back just to reveal the next level. The writing style makes it an easy read, which along with the levels of mystery make it hard to put down. - Just what the quote from the Independent on Sunday said according to the back cover.

As such I read it in a couple of days over the weekend. It was in the main an enjoyable read, and I will be looking out for more of his books in the future.

This was book 13 week 10 fiction 12 (2 on audio) non fiction 1
