At around 5.30am on the 5th July were were woken up with a loud bang.
Groggerly looking around the house we could not see anything obvious except that the power was off, (yet another power failure of some kind this year) and went back to bed hoping that it would come back on again before having to get up.
Sadly this was not the case and during the course of the morning we heard that some of our neighbours had had their TV's “explode” on them. So what had happened. CE-Electric described it as a “fault situation”. What ever it was meant that the power was off for nearly 14 hours and a number of our electrical appliances were damaged.
The strange thing with this was how inconsistent the damage was. We had two electric fly/midge killers plugged in and running. On at the front of the house and one near the back. One was broken and the other not. In the kitchen we had two appliances turned on in adjacent sockets, both had their fuses blown but on replacing them one was fine the other trashed.
The oil hot water boiler was on at the time of the incident and our heating engineer has subsequently told me that this was saved by the control unit being destroyed. There must have been a total short across it as the plastic wall mount shows sign of some melting.
So what caused all this damage to all the properties around the area. The rumours are rife, about the only thing I have not heard is the claim that it was an alien. All we do know is that it was “not due to a deliberate act or negligence on the part of CE-Electric UK” according to Matthew Preston – their customer service operations manager..
